Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women Suffer Sweep to Bethany

BETHANY, W. Va. – The Geneva women's volleyball team made things close in the first set against Bethany College on Saturday, but could not earn a set victory as they lost to the Bison in three (25-27, 17-25, 14-25). It's been a tough stretch for the women over the past two weeks, as they have now lost five consecutive matches following their dramatic upset over Grove City at the beginning of the month. The loss sends the GTs' record to 4-19 overall, 1-9 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Bethany jumps to 7-12 overall, 4-6 in the conference.

There was not much to separate the two sides in set one, with neither team gaining much of an edge until midway through the frame when the Golden Tornadoes took a 12-8 advantage following two Bethany errors. The Bison worked their way back to recapture the lead, 15-14, but Geneva stuck around. Bethany actually had set point at 24-21, but a Bison error, an ace by freshman Kendall Anderson, and a kill from senior Emily Nelson evened up the score once again. Unfortunately, the hosts closed out the set by scoring three of the final four points, winning it 27-25.

Bethany went ahead 12-5 to start the second set, and Geneva struggled to recover. Back-to-back aces off the serve of Nelson pulled the GTs within three points, 13-10, but that was the closest the women would get before the end of the set. The Bison kept their momentum into the third set, jumping in front 11-6, and the Golden Tornadoes never really challenged from then on out, with Bethany winning the third and final set 25-14.

Nelson was Geneva's leading kill-getter on the day, finishing the match with eight total. In addition, she put up 13 digs and a match-high five service aces. Junior Daphne Alexander was right behind her with seven kills of her own on a .217 hitting percentage, notching three blocks as well. Sophomore Laura Goonewardene directed the offense with 23 assists, while senior Heather Seubert totaled a team-high 15 digs.

Geneva's next chance to get back in the win column comes on Wednesday, October 22nd, with a 7:00 p.m. home match against Westminster.
