PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team dominated long stretches of its match on Wednesday night at Chatham, but the men couldn't convert their chances and saw the Cougars escape with a 1-0 victory over the Golden Tornadoes. The loss puts the men in a precarious position to qualify of the upcoming Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoffs as Geneva now stands at 5-9-1 overall, 4-4-1 in the PAC with just two regular season matches remaining.
Geneva controlled most of the first half, with most of the half played primarily in Chatham's end. However, the Golden Tornadoes couldn't convert their chances, and Chatham took advantage of its lone chance in the first half, collecting a loose ball in the box in the 28th minute and scoring to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half was an offensive onslaught for the Golden Tornadoes against the Chatham goal, yet every chance was frustratingly unable to find the net. Senior Wil Dunda hit the crossbar early in the second half, and a few minutes later senior Gabe Singh's shot hit the post. Freshman Msafiri Amisi had a great look from the spot midway through the half that was cleared off the line.
As the time ticked away, Chatham bunkered in more and more, and the men could not find the breakthrough goal it needed to equalize despite constant pressure in Chatham's final third, suffering a very frustrating 1-0 loss.
Geneva finished the game with a 21-6 advantage in shots, but the Cougars were the only team to find the back of the net. The men also held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks as the majority of the game was played in Chatham's half.
Geneva is now sitting in a tie for the sixth and final playoff spot. The Golden Tornadoes still control their own destiny, but the men must win their final two matches of the season to guarantee a spot in the postseason. The first of those two matches is this Saturday on Geneva's Homecoming against Waynesburg at 7:30 p.m. The men will recognize their 12 seniors prior to the critical match.
