Women’s Soccer Topped by Bearcats on Rainy Night

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team traveled to first place Saint Vincent on Tuesday night, and the Bearcats prevailed 2-0 on a rainy and wet night.  The women are now 3-5-4 on the season, 2-2-1 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Saint Vincent improved to an impressive 10-1-1 overall, 4-0-1 in the PAC.

Saint Vincent came out with the better play, putting several shots either just wide of the Geneva net or on frame, which freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster saved well.

The consistent pressure eventually led to a goal in the 18th minute off a set piece.  Ten minutes later, the Bearcats caught a fortunate break when a cross off a corner kick deflected off a Geneva defender at the near post and went into the net, doubling Saint Vincent's lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.  It was the first time through eleven games of the season that the Golden Tornadoes' stout defense had allowed two goals prior to the break.

The women found their footing a little more in the second half, and while they kept the Bearcats off the board, Geneva couldn't find a breakthrough despite some good pressure over the final 20 minutes.

Saint Vincent finished with a 11-4 edge in shots, 5-3 in shots on goal.  Foster made four saves, including a couple of sparkling stops where she tipped balls just over the bar, to keep the Golden Tornadoes close.

Geneva will try to rebound on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Bethany for a 12:00 p.m. start.
