BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's volleyball program went up against a very tough Hiram College side on Wednesday night, falling to the Terriers in straight sets (8-25, 17-25, 16-25). Hiram took off right from the beginning of the first set and never looked back, handing Geneva the loss. The women now have an overall record of 4-16, 1-6 in Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, while Hiram continues to improve their own record, now standing at 14-2 overall and 6-1 in the PAC.
The visitors soared in front right from the get-go, 12-2, and the GTs could not make any headway, losing the first set 25-8. It appeared the same thing was going to happen in set two as the Terriers took a 14-5 lead early, but the women began to chip away. A 9-2 Geneva run, buoyed by the serve of senior
Emily Nelson, brought the Golden Tornadoes back within two points, 16-14, but that was where their luck ran dry. Hiram outscored Geneva 9-3 the rest of the way to take the set 25-17.
Again, Hiram jumped ahead to start the third set, seizing a 6-1 advantage almost immediately. The GTs responded well, slowly working their way back, and the gap was narrowed to one point following a kill by sophomore
Laura Goonewardene and an ace by junior
Daphne Alexander. The Terriers outscored the women 9-1 over the next few minutes, however, and rode out that momentum for a 25-16 set victory to complete the sweep.
Alexander had a team-high six kills in the loss, on a .250 hitting percentage. Goonewardene finished with 12 assists, and senior
Heather Seubert posted a team-high 15 digs.
The women are on the road this weekend for a 1:00 p.m. contest at Saint Vincent on Saturday, October 11
th. They will return home following that match for a home tilt versus Thiel next Wednesday.
