Volleyball Celebrates Seniors Versus W&J

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's volleyball team faced off with Washington and Jefferson College for Senior Night Saturday evening, falling to the Presidents in four sets (25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 17-25). After playing well for the first two frames, the GTs ran out of steam for the final two sets and could not come back for the win. The loss sends Geneva's record to 5-22 on the season, 2-12 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while W&J is now 14-12 overall, 9-5 in PAC play.

Prior to the match beginning, the Golden Tornadoes honored the four seniors on this year's roster – Emily Nelson, Heather Seubert, Abigail Glumac, and Evelyn Stroup. These seniors have all shown a commitment to the program over the course of their four years, and outside of Stroup, who has been injured this season, they have all played integral roles for the GTs this year.

Things started off well for Geneva in set one, with two kills and an ace from Nelson putting the women in front 6-2. Slowly, the Presidents started to creep back, eventually knotting the score at 14 apiece. Geneva responded with four consecutive points, the visitors scored four in a row, and it seemed it would come down to the wire. The GTs bucked up at that point though, winning five of the final six points thanks to two kills each from junior Katie Seboe and freshman Kendall Anderson. Geneva took the set 25-21.

Set two began much more closely than the first, although the women got out to a 10-6 advantage behind Nelson's serve. Again, the Presidents began to crawl their way back, tying things up at 20-20 as the set wound on. Nelson registered a kill to push Geneva in front, but W&J closed the set with five consecutive points to win it 25-21.

Two Nelson kills and an ace by freshman Ruthie Land gave the GTs a 5-1 edge to start set three, and another Nelson kill a few minutes later put the score at 9-5. The visitors put together a 14-2 run at that point, unfortunately, and led the rest of the way to take the set 25-18. That momentum carried into set four, and despite Geneva pulling within one point midway through the frame, 11-10, the women could not nab the lead and lost the set 25-17.

Nelson posted 17 kills in the win, leading the way offensively for the Golden Tornadoes while adding 18 digs. Junior Daphne Alexander, who recorded an efficient hitting percentage of .350, also finished in the double digits with 10 kills to her name. Land handed out a team-high 22 assists on the night, and Seubert notched a team-best 28 digs. Sophomore Laura Goonewardene ended the match with 14 assists and a career-high 17 digs.

The Golden Tornadoes finish up their season with two more home contests, the first of which is against Allegheny on Tuesday, November 4th. That match is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
