Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women’s Volleyball Falls to Allegheny in Three Sets

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – In the penultimate match of the regular season, the Geneva women's volleyball team dropped their contest with Allegheny College in three sets, 12-25, 21-25, 21-25. After a rough start to the match, the Golden Tornadoes hung with the Gators through the second two sets, but could not win either. Their record now stands at 5-23 overall, 2-13 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Allegheny, who is fighting for playoff position, moves to 14-12 overall, 8-7 in PAC play.

Things did not begin well for Geneva, with the visitors snagging an 11-3 advantage right off the bat. That difference quickly grew to 12 points, 17-5, and Allegheny rode out the advantage for a set victory. Set two was much closer, and a couple of tight points went in Geneva's favor which allowed the women to grab an 8-5 lead early. Allegheny kept it close as the set drew on, knotting the score at 17-17 at one point, but three consecutive GT points immediately afterward gave the Golden Tornadoes the edge. The Gators took matters into their own hands at that point, however, scoring eight of the final nine points to win set two.

Allegheny jumped ahead 9-5 in set three, but Geneva did not lie down. The Golden Tornadoes fought back over the next several minutes, and eventually pulled within one point, 17-16, following kills from senior Emily Nelson and freshman Kendall Anderson. The Gators pushed their lead back up to 21-17, and they hung on from then on out to secure the sweep.

After a solid final set, Nelson finished as Geneva's leader in kills, notching seven on a .179 hitting percentage to go with seven digs. Sophomore Laura Goonewardene and freshman Ruthie Land split the setting responsibilities, each posting nine apiece, and senior Heather Seubert finished with a team-best 16 digs.

The Golden Tornadoes wrap up their season at home this Saturday, hosting Grove City College at 7:00 p.m. The women won the last match between the two schools, a five-set thriller at Grove City in early October.
