BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's lacrosse program scored a season-high six goals on Tuesday afternoon in their match against Franciscan University, eventually falling to the Barons 19-6. Multiple players scored for Geneva for the first time in a couple of weeks as the women showed improvement across the board in their final home match of the season.
Despite Franciscan scoring twice in the opening minute of play, the Golden Tornadoes kept their cool, and a goal from freshman
Amanda Gillette got Geneva on the board with 6:31 to play in the first quarter. Junior
Hannah Skwarek won the draw control for the women immediately afterward, and sixteen seconds later sophomore
Mara Fowlow charged in and found the net to knot the score at 2-2. The Barons got their feet under them again at that point, however, and finished out the half on a 6-0 run to grab an 8-2 advantage.
Franciscan kept its momentum going into the second period, but Fowlow sliced through the defense again for Geneva's third goal with 4:03 to play in the half. The visitors scored once more after that, and the GTs trailed 11-3 heading into halftime.
Back-to-back goals by sophomore
Miranda Sinsley and Gillette brought Geneva within six and kept the women in the game to start the third quarter, but that was all the scoring the Golden Tornadoes could muster in that frame. Sophomore
Julianna Easley added a goal at the 6:43 mark of the fourth quarter to give the women their highest scoring output of the season, but they wound up dropping the match 19-6.
Gillette and Fowlow led the GTs with two goals each, with Gillette recording a team-best four shots on goal in the loss. She also won five draw controls and grabbed three ground balls for a very well-rounded stat line. Fowlow caused two turnovers as well. In goal, sophomore
Lexi Lee notched nine saves for the women.
Geneva plays one more match next week before the women conclude their inaugural season of play. They will take on Allegheny College next Wednesday, April 23
rd, at 4:00 p.m. for the season finale.
