Baseball Gets Big Victory Over New Kensington

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva baseball team stayed hot on Monday afternoon, winning their third straight game as they defeated Penn State New Kensington 13-6 on a beautiful spring afternoon. The Golden Tornadoes stayed hot at the plate, scoring at least seven runs for the sixth time in their past eight games, and they move to 17-15 overall on the season with the victory.

The men got the scoring started early, notching a run in the first inning on an opposite-field double by senior Eric Gonzalez that hugged the left field line, scoring sophomore Michael Twigg. An RBI-single by senior Zack Sackett in the next frame doubled the GTs' lead, and there the score would stay through the next two innings.

Sophomore Tyler Lemansky got the nod on the mound for Geneva and pitched well to start, allowing just one hit through the first two innings. He got out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the top of the third and pitched a scoreless fourth inning following that. Unfortunately, the Lions tagged him for two runs in the fifth, but he limited them to the tie, not allowing them to take the lead.

The GTs gave Lemansky three runs of support in the bottom of the fifth, with a double steal by Sackett and freshman Simon Wehr allowing the latter to score. Senior Zach Lemansky singled in a run later in the inning, and he eventually came home to score on a wild pitch to give Geneva a 5-2 edge.

Two runs from the Lions in the top of the sixth made it a one-score game, but Sackett blasted a solo homer to left field in the bottom of the inning to give momentum back to Geneva. Lemansky and Gonzalez both collected RBIs in the inning to make it an 8-4 game, and despite two more New Kensington runs in the next inning the GTs were never in danger after that.

Sackett singled home another run in the seventh, and a booming triple two batters later from Twigg scored both him and Wehr. Sophomore Bradley McGuire hit an RBI-single in the eighth inning, followed by another RBI-hit from senior Connor O'Brien, and that wrapped up the scoring on the day. Geneva cruised the rest of the way to a 13-6 victory.

Lemansky got the win for the Golden Tornadoes, his first of the season, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs. He also struck out three batters. Sackett led the way at the plate, putting together an impressive 4-for-5 performance with a home run, three RBIs and two runs scored. Gonzalez went 3-for-4 offensively with two doubles and two RBIs, and Lemansky, McGuire, and O'Brien each finished with multiple hits as well. Wehr stole a game-high three bases while also scoring three runs.

Currently, the men are scheduled to play home doubleheaders the next two days, taking on Fredonia tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. and Kent State Tuscarawas on Wednesday, April 30th, at 1:30 p.m. However, potential rain tomorrow has put this week's schedule up in the air.
