BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Less than 24 hours after the Geneva College women's soccer team picked up an impressive victory at Juniata to open the season on Friday, the Golden Tornadoes put together another strong performance on Saturday afternoon in their home opener, battling visiting Baldwin Wallace to a scoreless draw. The women have yet to concede a goal in their first 180 minutes of play, and its the first time since 2010 Geneva has shutout its opening two opponents of the season.
Neither team could generate much offense in the first half, and the first 45 minutes was a very even affair. Geneva almost broke through 15 minutes into the match, though, when freshman Ruth Bartley hit a beautiful curling shot with her left foot from just inside the box, easily beating the Baldwin Wallace keeper. Unfortunately, the ball slammed off the cross bar and was cleared by the Yellow Jackets. That was the only real chance of the first half for either team, with Baldwin Wallace holding a slim 5-4 edge in shots heading into halftime.
The Yellow Jackets came out of the break with the better of the play, as the Golden Tornadoes battled fatigue from their second match in less than 24 hours, compared to a Baldwin Wallace team that was playing its first game of the year and appeared a little fresher. The Yellow Jackets equaled their shot total from the first half in the opening ten minutes of the second half, yet Geneva's freshman goalkeeper Natalie Foster proved up for the challenge.
Geneva settled into a better rhythm midway through the final half, but the Yellow Jackets continued to push, looking for a breakthrough goal. However, it was the Golden Tornadoes that almost found a winner with seven minutes to go, but junior Abby Stover's well taken shot again hit the crossbar.
Foster came up with her best save of the day with a minute to go when she made a tremendous quick-reflex save on a close-range header that appeared headed into the net, pushing the ball over the bar to preserve the shutout and the draw.
Baldwin Wallace outshot Geneva 12-2 in the second half and finished the match with a 17-6 edge in shots, including an 8-1 advantage in shots on goal. Foster was again impressive in the net, confidently handling all the shots she faced while making eight saves in picking up her second shutout of the season just a day into her collegiate career.
The women will get some much-needed rest over the next couple days before welcoming Alfred on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The match will be hosted down at the grass field at the Merriman Athletic Complex.
