NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team split a tri-match on Saturday at Westminster, falling to the Titans in straight sets (25-15, 25-19, 25-18) before rebounding for a straight set victory over Penn State DuBois (25-10, 25-15, 25-7).
In the first match of the day against Westminster, Geneva got off to a great start by scoring the first six points of the match while jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Senior Emily Nelson had two aces in the stretch, while senior Abigail Glumac and freshman Kendall Anderson each had kills. Unfortunately, the women couldn't sustain things. Westminster answered with an 18-2 run to take a commanding 19-10 edge, finishing off the set 25-15.
It was Westminster that jumped ahead early in the second set, 10-3. Geneva pulled within 13-10 on kills from Nelson and junior Gracyn Lee, but the Titans scored the next eight points and controlled the rest of the set in winning 25-19.
The women stayed with Westminster early in the third set, grabbing a 12-10 lead at one point. However, as the Titans had done in the first two sets, they used a big run, this one 10-2, to take control and finish off the match, 25-18.
Glumac led the team offensively with nine kills. Sophomore Laura Goonewardene finished with 18 assists, while senior Heather Seubert had a team-high 19 digs.
In the second match of the day against Penn State DuBois, Geneva surged out to a big lead in the first set, 14-2, getting three early kills from Glumac. The women cruised the rest of the set, winning 25-10 on a kill from Lee.
Back-to-back aces from freshman Ruthie Land early in the second set helped Geneva grab an early 8-3 edge. DuBois pulled within three points, 13-10, before the Golden Tornadoes responded with six straight points, the last two points on back-to-back kills from Lee. Freshman Julia McChesney finished off the set with a kill, 25-15.
Geneva pulled away in the third set, scoring the first six points behind kills from Lee and freshman Kaelyn Keefer, and an ace from Goonewardene. The women steadily increased their lead through the rest of the set, and three straight kills from freshman Kaiya Coleman finished off the match, 25-7.
Lee and junior Katie Seboe led the women in the second match with seven kills apiece. Goonewardene contributed 18 assists again, while Seubert again led the team with 13 digs.
Saturday's match against Penn State Du Bois was the last non-conference contest of the season for Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes now turn their attention exclusively to Presidents' Athletic Conference play, beginning with a road match at Thiel on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
