Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Road Stays Tough for Women’s Volleyball at Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) schedule makers didn't do any favors for the Geneva College women's volleyball team, scheduling the Golden Tornadoes to open PAC play with three straight road matches against some of the top teams in the conference.  On Wednesday night, playing their third straight PAC road match, the Golden Tornadoes dropped a straight set decision (25-22, 25-22, 25-11) at Thiel.  The women are now 3-13 overall, 0-3 in the PAC.

Thiel used a 7-1 run early in the first set to jump ahead 8-4, but Geneva refused to go away.  The women stayed close throughout the set, and senior Emily Nelson delivered a kill and an ace late to pull the Golden Tornadoes even for the first time since the beginning of the set, 21-21.  However, the Tomcats closed on a 4-1 run to win the set, 25-22.

The second set was a close affair as well, and a kill from sophomore Laura Goonewardene pulled Geneva even at 9-9.  Thiel followed with a 6-2 run, forcing the Golden Tornadoes to play from behind.  The women stayed close, though, pulling within 22-21 on a kill from senior Abigail Glumac.  Unfortunately, Thiel closed out the set with another 25-22 score.

The third set got away from Geneva early.  The Tomcats strung together eight straight points to grab control, 11-2, and the Golden Tornadoes never rebounded in falling 25-11.

Nelson led the team with eight kills, while juniors Daphne Alexander and Katie Seboe each finished with six kills.  Geneva finished with a .111 hitting percentage, while Thiel countered with a .284 hitting percentage behind a combined 28 kills from Daisy Jenness and Kylee Jordan.

Goonewardene finished with 23 assists and 12 digs.  Senior Heather Seubert led the team with 22 digs, while freshman Julia McChesney added 12 digs.

Geneva will finally get a chance to play a PAC match inside Metheny Fieldhouse on Saturday night, but the schedule doesn't get any easier as Chatham, who is a perfect 3-0 in conference play, comes to town.  The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
