BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – Senior Wil Dunda scored in the opening minutes of the Geneva College men's soccer team's Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) opener against W&J on Wednesday night on Reeves Field, and the Geneva defense made the early strike hold up to earn the Golden Tornadoes a 1-0 victory, their second straight shutout. Geneva improved to 2-5 overall, but more importantly 1-0 in the PAC.
Things started beautifully for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva earned a throw-in deep on their side of the field. Senior Jeremy Thompson threw the ball in towards midfield where senior George Cottenden collected the ball and turned and delivered a long pass across the field to freshman Msafiri Amisi. Amisi ran at his defender with the ball and made a cut across the top of the box. He faked a shot and instead slotted a pass in between two W&J defenders into the middle of the box that Dunda ran onto. Dunda took one touch and then beat the W&J keeper to the near post to give Geneva a quick 1-0 lead. It was an excellent sequence of passes.
Geneva continued to press after the goal, not satisfied with the early lead, and the Golden Tornadoes generated several good chances that they couldn't convert. The defense completely locked down W&J, though. The Presidents' best chance came in the 9th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Noah Buchanan made a nice diving stop on a shot from just outside the box. That proved to be the only shot on goal W&J managed all game.
Geneva controlled the rest of the match as W&J struggled to possess the ball in Geneva's half of the field. The Golden Tornadoes never found a second goal, but their defense completely stymied the W&J attack. The Presidents managed just one more shot the rest of the game after Buchanan's early save, and that shot from distance midway through the second half went well wide of the net and never troubled Buchanan. Geneva cleanly closed out the 1-0 shutout.
Geneva finished with a 15-2 advantage in shots, though the Golden Tornadoes only managed to put four of those shots on frame. Amisi led the team with four shots, while Dunda and Cottenden were both active as well with three shots apiece.
Buchanan has now started twice for the Golden Tornadoes and has two shutouts to his credit. After posting seven saves in the 1-0 win at Muskingum over the weekend, Buchanan was just called on to make the one early save against the Presidents.
The men will try to keep their winning streak going on Saturday when the Golden Tornadoes travel to Westminster to take on the Titans at 3:30 p.m.
