Men’s Soccer Knocks Off Titans

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College men's soccer team completed the Westminster sweep on Saturday, defeating the Titans 3-1 just two hours after the women also picked up an important Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory.  Geneva has now won three straight games and improved to 3-5 overall, 2-0 in the PAC.

The men dominated the first half, and senior Gabe Singh got Geneva on the board in the 15th minute when he received a pass from senior Wil Dunda and beat the Westminster keeper with his low shot across the face of goal and inside the far post.

The Golden Tornadoes doubled their lead 15 minutes later when freshman Luke Kost stole a Titan pass and fed senior George Cottenden in the Westminster box, and Cottenden turned and fired one past the Titan goalkeeper to send Geneva into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Geneva had a couple of chances in the second half to increase its lead, but slowly some momentum started to turn towards the Titans.  Fifteen minutes into the half, senior Jeremy Thompson made tremendous save on the goal line, heading a shot away that was headed into the net.

However, Westminster broke through in the 74th minute to cut Geneva's lead in half, and the Golden Tornadoes had a couple of nervous moments over the next ten minutes as they tried to keep the Titans from pulling level.

Geneva regrouped, though, and Dunda sealed the win with a goal in the 87th minute off a feed from sophomore Luke Main, and the Golden Tornadoes finished off the 3-1 victory.

Geneva finished with a 17-8 edge in shots, with Dunda and Main each leading the team with four shots apiece.  Freshman Noah Buchanan earned the win in goal, making four saves.

The win sets up a big regular season matchup on Wednesday against Grove City.  The kickoff on Reeves Field is set for 7:00 p.m.
