Men’s Soccer Narrowly Edged Out by RIT in Nailbiter

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It's been a frustrating start to the year for the Geneva men's soccer program, who again fell victim to the referee's whistle in their loss to RIT on Saturday afternoon. Despite the negative result, there was lots to be entertained by, especially in the final ten minutes of the contest, but the Golden Tornadoes eventually lost 2-1. Their record slips to 0-3 to start the year, while the Tigers jump up to 2-1 on the season.

The GTs' first chance of the match came in the fourth minute, as a stray RIT pass ended up at the feet of Geneva senior Mike Rogers. Rogers played the ball into the box where freshman Msafiri Amisi was able to run onto it, but Amisi's attempt at the near post was saved. That proved to be the best opportunity of the half for the men, as both sides settled in on defense and made things difficult for the opposing attack. The two teams went into the halftime break tied, 0-0.

RIT had the better of the play coming out of the break, nearly scoring on a free kick in the opening minute of the half. After a few minutes of constant threat to the Geneva back line, the visitors finally broke through, with Moobin Kim making a run down the left sideline and slotting the ball past the goalkeeper to break the stalemate in the 61st minute. Geneva nearly evened the score back up just nine minutes later, as a failed RIT clearance went right to the feet of senior Jeremy Thompson, but Thompson pulled his left-footed shot wide of the post.

Geneva continued to threaten over the next fifteen minutes, with good opportunities from freshman Luke Kost and Rogers getting saved and missing high, respectively. Finally, in the 86th minute, Amisi slipped through the Tigers back line after they mishandled the ball, and knocked it past the keeper to seemingly tie the match, but the goal was called back due to offsides. Kim scored once more for the Tigers to give them an insurance goal, which they ended up needing. Geneva freshman Travis Miller made a beautiful run into the box immediately following the kickoff, and Amisi found him on a nice through ball to cut the deficit in half. That would do it for the scoring, though, as Geneva could not muster a last-second chance to tie it.

Both sides played fairly evenly in terms of generated chances, with RIT taking eight shots to Geneva's seven. The Golden Tornadoes had a 3-2 advantage in shots on goal, but the Tigers were more efficient with the opportunities they had.

Up next for the men is a home match on Wednesday, September 10th, against Mount Aloysius at 7:00 p.m. That will be the final installment in Geneva's four-match opening homestand.
