VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team completed its play at the Virginia Wesleyan Tournament with an early morning match on Saturday against Wisconsin Lutheran, falling in four sets 25-12, 25-14, 19-25, 27-25.
Wisconsin Lutheran jumped out early in both the first two sets as Geneva struggled to get going in the early match, winning comfortably 25-12 and 25-14 in those sets.
Geneva rebounded in the next set, though. The men opened the third set with a kill from freshman Joshua Stowe and an ace from senior Andrew Ubinger, and the Golden Tornadoes led almost the entire set. Geneva extended its lead to 13-7 after a 6-1 run, getting kills from Stowe, Ubinger and senior Evan Puhl. Wisconsin Lutheran tried to rally, pulling within 20-18 late, but an ace from Ubinger and kill from freshman Aaron Villi regained control for the men, and a kill from Puhl finished off the win, 25-19.
Geneva carried that momentum into the fourth set, scoring seven straight points to grab a 7-2 lead. Stowe had two aces, junior Owen Kelley two kills, and Villi another kill in the run. The Warriors rallied to pull even, though, and the set stayed close until a run gave Wisconsin Lutheran a 23-18 lead. Geneva never folded, though, pulling even at 24-24 after kills from Villi and Kelley, but the men couldn't complete the comeback in falling 27-25.
Villi led the offense with 12 kills and 13 assists, while Ubinger added eight kills and 21 assists, Kelley seven kills and Stowe six kills for Geneva. The men hit .196.
Geneva will return to action on Wednesday with a road match at Carlow, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
