WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva women's volleyball team looked strong to start their match against Washington & Jefferson on Saturday afternoon, winning the first set, but they wound up dropping the next three, falling 25-19, 18-25, 13-25, 10-25. The GTs continue to slide as they remain in search of their first Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victory, falling to 7-14 overall on the season, 0-6 in PAC play.
Kills by freshman
Sarah Elkins and senior
Daphne Alexander, along with an ace by senior
Gracyn Lee, put Geneva ahead 6-1 to start the match. W&J came back to within one point, 8-7, but the GTs responded with a 6-2 run to regain control. The score remained close throughout the set, with Geneva leading 20-17 late, and two late kills from sophomore
Kendall Anderson boosted the women to a 25-19 victory in set one.
The Presidents jumped in front 10-3 in the second set, but Geneva adjusted well, scoring six points in a row during one stretch behind three Elkins aces to pull within 16-14. Unfortunately, W&J scored six consecutive points of their own after that and led the rest of the set to take it 25-18.
Sets three and four did not go Geneva's way. W&J took a 14-3 lead to start the third frame and an 11-3 lead to start the fourth, and the Golden Tornadoes did not threaten for the remainder of each set.
Elkins finished the match with 12 kills, most on the team, as well as a team-best three service aces. Anderson recorded eight kills of her own in a nice performance for the sophomore. Freshman
Kyla Kephart and junior
Laura Goonewardene split the setting duties, registering 15 and 11 assists, respectively, while freshmen
Chloe Borisuk and
Vanessa Crider tied for the team-lead in digs with 10 apiece.
The Golden Tornadoes play just once next week, hosting Bethany College on Friday, October 23, for Senior Day. That match is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
