BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's volleyball team couldn't find a way past visiting Allegheny on Wednesday evening inside Metheny Fieldhouse, despite receiving a career night from senior Daphne Alexander, eventually falling in four sets 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 25-16. Geneva is still in search of its first conference victory, while Allegheny emerged with its first conference win of the season.
In the first set, Geneva scored four straight to pull even at 8-8 behind a kill from freshman Sarah Elkins and a block from Alexander, but Allegheny responded with a 12-5 run to take control of the set on its way to a 25-18 win.
Geneva again fell behind early in set two, 8-5, before Alexander powered the Golden Tornadoes to a victory. A kill from Alexander and two kills from sophomore Amanda Mitan pulled the women even at 9-9, and a block from seniors Katie Seboe and Gracyn Lee gave the Golden Tornadoes the lead. Down the stretch, Alexander added six more kills as Geneva won comfortably, 25-18, to even the match.
Geneva's trend of falling behind early continued in the final two sets, though. In set three, Allegheny jumped ahead 7-2, and in set four, the Gators took an early 9-3 advantage, and neither time the Golden Tornadoes could fight all the way back, losing the third set 25-20 and the fourth set 25-16.
Alexander posted a career high 21 kills on a .390 hitting percentage. Elkins added ten kills to the attack. Geneva hit .169 as a team, compared to .224 for Allegheny. Freshman Kyla Kephart finished with a career high 37 assists, while freshman Chloe Borisuk led the team with a career high 14 digs. Elkins and sophomore Ruthie Land each added 13 digs.
Geneva plays its next three matches on the road, beginning with a contest at Chatham on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
