NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams are wrapping up the most successful indoor season in school history after both programs captured Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Championships two weeks ago. On Friday, a total of ten different Golden Tornadoes were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches (USTFCCCA) as All-Region selections.
Geneva competes in the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic region, and to be name an All-Region selection a student-athlete must finish in the top eight in the region in an event, or participate on a relay team that finished with one of the top eight times in the region.
On the women's side, senior Hailey Carroll was named an All-Region selection in three different events after putting together one of the best indoor seasons in school history. She finished fourth in the region in the 800-meters with a school record time of 2:14.55. She finished fifth in the region, and missed out on qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet by one place, in the mile with a school record time of 4:53.87. Carroll also finished with the fifth fastest time in the 3000-meters with a school record time of 9:48.21.
In addition on the women's side, junior Daphne Alexander was the top finisher for a Golden Tornado in the region with her second-place high jump finish after clearing a school record 1.63 meters. Senior Allison Standish was also honored after placing seventh in the shot put with a throw of 11.99 meters.
On the men's side, sophomore Abe Konneh was the standout for the Golden Tornadoes. He earned All-Region honors in both the 60-meters, placing fourth with a school record time of 6.84 seconds, along with a fifth-place finish in the 200-meters with a school record time of 21.48 seconds. Konneh qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet in the 200-meter event and will be competing later on Friday in the preliminaries.
Additionally, freshman Titus Mathews was named an All-Region selection after finishing seventh in the region in the 400-meters with a school record time of 49.06 seconds. Junior Isaac Nirella made the list by finishing eighth in the region in the pole vault with a school record clearance of 4.55 meters.
In the jumps, graduate student Jack Garvin finished fifth in the region in the high jump by clearing 1.95 meters, while freshman Stanford Webb finished eighth in the region in the long jump with a school record jump of 6.85 meters.
In addition to the individual events, Geneva's men's 4x400-meter relay team of Konneh, Mathews, senior Seth Tyson and freshman Tyler Boyle also received All-Region distinction after placing fifth in the region with a school record relay time of 3:21.66
Most of the Golden Tornadoes are opening their outdoor season this weekend at the Myrtle Beach Collegiate Challenge, with Konneh competing at the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships.
