NAPLES, Fla. – Seniors Sophia Tvaroch and Alena Campbell combined for a five-inning no-hitter in the Geneva softball team's final game in Florida on Monday, with the duo leading the way to an 8-0 victory over St. Joseph's Brooklyn. The women also received a strong pitching performance from senior McKenzie Rapp in game one against an undefeated Westfield State team, but Geneva couldn't come up with any offense before falling 2-0. The Golden Tornadoes finish their Spring Break trip with a successful 9-3 record.
In the first game of the day against a Westfield State team that came in with an impressive 7-0 record, while averaging almost nine runs per game in those wins, Rapp proved up for the task against the best squad Geneva faced in Florida.
Westfield pushed across a run in the top of the first on a two-out base hit, and a two-out Geneva error in the top of the second allowed the Owls to double their lead. Rapp controlled the powerful Westfield offense over the final five frames, though, giving up just one hit while giving the Golden Tornadoes a chance to come back.
The offense was held in check by Westfield starter Angelina Vartuli, but the Golden Tornadoes had their chances to respond. Geneva put runners on first and third with one out in the fourth, but a line-drive double play ended the rally. The women also had a chance in the fifth when the first two Golden Tornadoes reached base, but Geneva couldn't bring them home.
Geneva had one final chance to pull even in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Payton James led off with a walk, and after an out, junior Faith Bonar doubled to put runners at second and third with one out. Unfortunately, a strikeout and a pop-up ended the game.
Rapp pitched all seven innings, giving up eight hits and just one earned run, taking the hard-luck loss.
Tvaroch took the ball in game two against Saint Joseph's Brooklyn, and junior Molly Shelley led off the game with a double and then stole third. She eventually scored on an error off the bat of senior Justine Robbins, and Robbins came around to score on a hit from junior Aliya Ottaviani.
Tvaroch dominated the Bears' offense from the start, striking out the first two batters she faced. Shelley doubled home senior Madison Rapp in the second to increase Geneva's lead to 3-0.
Geneva broke the game open in the fifth, scoring five times. Junior Kyra Wilcox drove in Shelley with a single. After a double from senior Lexi Zanic, Robbins tripled to drive in both Wilcox and Zanic, and Robbins scampered home on a throwing error by the centerfielder. Sophomore Katelynn Knepper drove home the final run with a single.
Campbell relieved Tvaroch in the bottom of the fifth, yielding just a one-out walk before striking out the final two batters to seal the no-hitter.
Tvaroch got the win with four scoreless innings, giving up just one walk while striking out three.
Robbins and Shelley both finished with two hits to lead the offense. Shelley scored twice and drove in one, while Robbins finished with two runs scored and two RBIs.
Geneva was originally scheduled to face Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday for its home opener, but that doubleheader has been pushed to Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
