Walk-off Win Caps Off Softball’s Sweep of Pitt-Greensburg

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva softball team came away with a pair of close victories over Pitt-Greensburg Thursday afternoon, defeating the Bobcats 4-3 in both games. The ending of game two was full of excitement, with the Golden Tornadoes entering the bottom of the seventh down a run before tying up the score and going on to win on a walk-off play by senior Justine Robbins. Geneva's record improves to 11-3 following the sweep, while Pitt-Greensburg drops to 2-10.

The women scored quickly to start game one, with junior Molly Shelley knocking a double in the first at-bat before coming in to score later in the inning thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Kyra Wilcox. The Bobcats answered with two runs in the top of the second inning before Wilcox evened the score in the third, stealing third base before coming home on a Pitt-Greensburg error.

Senior McKenzie Rapp started the game in the pitcher's circle for the women, and she kept things close for the Golden Tornado batters. With the score tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, Geneva struck with another run. Three straight singles by sophomore Isabela Skrlac, Shelley, and Wilcox to open the inning pushed Skrlac across, but once again, the Bobcats came right back to knot the score in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Shelley reached base safely on a single and then proceeded to steal both second and third base in quick succession. Wilcox singled her home in the next at-bat, and Geneva held on for the 4-3 victory.

Rapp went the distance in game one, tossing all 7.0 innings to earn the win, her fourth of the season. She allowed three runs and struck out one. Wilcox was the top batter for Geneva, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run. Shelley went 3-for-4 with a double, scoring two runs of her own and stealing three bases. Senior Lexi Zanic contributed two hits out of the three-hole.

Senior Sophia Tvaroch was named the starter for game two, and after an up-and-down first frame she settled down to keep the Bobcats off the board for the first three innings. Neither team could generate much at the plate until Pitt-Greensburg scored two runs in the top of the fourth on a Geneva error that would have ended the inning.

The women responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, with a single by sophomore Katelynn Knepper pushing across Robbins for the first run. A sacrifice fly by senior Madison Rapp scored junior Aliya Ottaviani, tying the score at 2-2. Pitt-Greensburg came right back in the top half of the inning with a run of their own, and the visitors led 3-2 all the way until the bottom of the seventh.

Skrlac came up big in the first at-bat of the inning by lining a pinch-hit single into centerfield. Two more singles by Shelley and Wilcox loaded up the bases, and then Skrlac came in to score thanks to a sacrifice fly from Zanic. Shelley and Wilcox pulled off a double steal to put runners on second and third base, and then Shelley came home on a walk-off RBI from Robbins, clinching the win for Geneva.

Tvaroch allowed one earned run in her start, striking out three batters in 5.0 innings. Senior Alena Campbell earned the win in relief after allowing just one hit in the final 2.0 innings. Wilcox was the only Geneva batter with multiple hits in the win, going 2-for-4, while Zanic, Robbins, Knepper, and Madison Rapp all came up with RBIs.

The Golden Tornadoes will now turn their attention to Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) play, which begins this weekend. Geneva hosts Westminster this Saturday, March 21, in the women's PAC opener.
