Softball Bats Silent in PAC Opener

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team could not get its offense going on Saturday afternoon at home against preseason Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) favorite Westminster, and the Titans left town with wins of 7-1 and 5-1 in the doubleheader.  Geneva is now 11-5 overall.

Senior Sophia Tvaroch took the circle in game one, and after a scoreless first inning, three walks led to two Westminster runs in the top of the second to put Geneva in an early hole.

The Golden Tornadoes were unable to put together much offensively against Westminster ace Cheyenne Piper.  Geneva did get on the board in bottom of the fourth when senior Lexi Zanic doubled home junior Kyra Wilcox to cut the Titan lead in half.

That was all the Golden Tornadoes could generate offensively against Piper, though, and the Titans put the game away with five runs over the final two innings against the Geneva bullpen to win 7-1.

Senior McKenzie Rapp took the ball in game two, and once again the Titans jumped ahead with two early runs, this time in the top of the first.  Rapp settled down after the early traffic, though, retiring 13 of the next 14 Titans she faced.

Sophomore Stacey Rodriguez drove in senior Madison Rapp with an RBI-double in the bottom of the second, but Geneva's offense could never get its offense on track.

Piper relieved Westminster starter Natalie Davis in the bottom of the fifth after sophomore Isabela Skrlac led off with a single, and she got out of that inning unscathed.  The Titans then took control of the game by scoring three times in the top of the sixth, aided by two Geneva errors, before finishing off the 5-1 win.

The Golden Tornadoes outhit Westminster 7-6 in game two, but the Titans bunched their hits together better.  Rodriguez led the offense with two hits and an RBI.  Rapp pitched all seven innings for the complete-game effort.

The women host Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday for a non-conference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. before resuming conference play on Wednesday afternoon with a home doubleheader against Saint Vincent.
