BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team picked up its first two Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) victories of the season on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Saint Vincent, both by identical 9-1 scores in five innings. Geneva improved to 13-5 on the season, 2-2 in the PAC with the wins.
Senior McKenzie Rapp took the ball in the circle in game one, and the Golden Tornadoes gave her some early run support. Senior Justine Robbins brought home junior Molly Shelley with an RBI-groundout in the bottom of the first, and Geneva added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Junior Faith Bonar scored the first run, and then sophomore Isabela Skrlac and junior Kyra Wilcox delivered RBI-singles later in the inning.
Saint Vincent got on the board with a solo run in the top of the fourth, but Geneva answered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. Wilcox and Robbins both provided RBI-doubles to extend the Golden Tornado lead to 6-1.
Rapp got into some trouble in the top of the fifth, with the first three Bearcats reaching base on soft singles to load the bases. Junior Jorja Koerner relieved Rapp, though, and got out of the jam without allowing a run.
In the bottom of the inning, junior Aliya Ottaviani led off with a double, and senior Madison Rapp followed with a single to advance Ottaviani to third. Sophomore Katelynn Knepper drove in both with a double, and Shelley drove in the final run to invoke the mercy rule and end the game, 9-1.
Rapp earned her fifth win of the season with four innings of work, giving up ten hits but just one run, while striking out four. Koerner earned the save for her work in relief.
Wilcox, Robbins, Ottaviani and Skrlac all contributed two hits to the attack. Wilcox, Robbins and Knepper each drove in two runs, while Shelley and Ottaviani each scored twice.
Senior Sophia Tvaroch got the ball to start game two, and Geneva jumped out to a big lead with five runs in the bottom of the second. Freshman Keira Rodu drove home Ottaviani with a single, and then senior Lexi Zanic delivered the big hit with a two-out, bases-loaded double to bring in three runs. Robbins followed with a double to drive in Zanic for the final run of the inning.
The Bearcats pushed across a run in the top of the third off Tvaroch, but Geneva got that run back, along with two more, when Shelley drove a ball over the left field fence for a three-run home run, Geneva's first homer of the season.
Geneva ended the game in the bottom of the fifth when junior Malerie Branson earned a bases-loaded walk, again invoking the mercy run, 9-1.
Tvaroch earned her fourth win of the season, pitching four innings while giving up four hits and one run, striking out three.
Shelley led the attack in game two, going 2-of-3 with a home run, three RBIs and a stolen base. Robbins also added two hits, while Zanic drove in three. Sophomore Stacey Rodriguez scored twice.
The women are back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader at Thiel, starting at 1:00 p.m.
