GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team increased its winning streak to four games with wins of 9-1 and 9-4 at Thiel on Monday afternoon. Geneva is now 15-5 overall, 4-2 in the conference.
In game one, Geneva jumped ahead with a big first inning. Junior Molly Shelley led off with a double, stole third and came home on a throwing error. Later in the inning, Geneva loaded the bases with two outs and senior Madison Rapp delivered a bases-clearing triple to stake the Golden Tornadoes to a 4-0 lead before Thiel had batted.
Senior McKenzie Rapp got the ball in the circle in game one, and Thiel greeted her with a leadoff home run to get the Tomcats quickly on the board. That run was the last time a Tomcat base runner crossed the plate, though, as Rapp controlled the Thiel offense the rest of the game.
The women added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly from junior Kyra Wilcox and a throwing error by the Tomcats.
The Golden Tornadoes wrapped up their scoring in the sixth when Shelley drove in two with a double, and she eventually scored on an RBI-groundout from senior Lexi Zanic.
Senior Alena Campbell relieved Rapp and closed out the victory in six innings, 9-1. Rapp earned her sixth win of the season, pitching five innings while giving up just four hits and one run.
Shelley led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, two RBIs and a stolen base. Wilcox and sophomores Stacey Rodriguez and Isabela Skrlac also contributed two hits, with Rodriguez scoring twice. Madison Rapp drove in three runs.
Senior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the circle in game two, and Geneva again got on the board first, this time in the top of the third. Shelley singled with one out, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a throwing error when Wilcox stole second. Later in the inning, junior Faith Bonar delivered a two-out, two-run single, and junior Aliya Ottaviani followed with a double to drive in Bonar to increase the lead to 4-0.
Geneva added two more runs in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double from Zanic, but the Tomcats got on the board in the bottom of the frame, courtesy a two-out throwing error.
The Golden Tornado offense kept adding runs, though. Rodriguez and Ottaviani scored runs in the fifth, and freshman Mia Yenges worked a bases-loaded walk in the sixth to push the Geneva lead to 9-2.
Thiel added two late runs in the bottom of the seventh off the Geneva bullpen to close out the scoring, 9-4.
Tvaroch earned her fifth win of the season, pitching five innings while giving up just three hits and two unearned runs, striking out three.
Ottaviani led the offense with a perfect 4-of-4 effort at the plate, doubling twice while scoring once and driving in one run. Shelley added three hits, scoring three times while adding another stolen base. Zanic and Bonar contributed two hits and two RBIs apiece to the attack.
Geneva gets right back into action tomorrow with a home doubleheader against Waynesburg starting at 3:30 p.m.
