BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team picked up an impressive sweep of Waynesburg at home on Tuesday, receiving a walk-off home run from senior Justine Robbins to win game one, 7-5, before receiving a gem of a pitching performance from senior Sophia Tvaroch to shut out the Yellow Jackets in game two, 3-0. Geneva has now won six in a row and improved to 17-5 overall, 6-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Senior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game one, and both team's offenses were active throughout the game. Waynesburg got on the board in the top of the first with a run, but Geneva answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Junior Molly Shelley led off with a single and stole second before scoring on a triple from junior Kyra Wilcox. Wilcox later scored on a wild pitch to give the Golden Tornadoes a 2-1 lead.
Waynesburg took the lead back with two runs in the top of the third, helped out by a Geneva error, but a leadoff double by Shelley, followed by a steal of third, eventually allowed the Golden Tornadoes to pull even at 3-3.
The Yellow Jackets immediately took the lead back in the top of the fourth with a run, though, but Rapp left the bases loaded to prevent further damage. Waynesburg added an insurance run in the sixth against the Geneva bullpen to increase its lead to 5-3.
The Golden Tornadoes rallied in the bottom of the seventh, though. Sophomore Stacey Rodriguez led off with a double. Sophomore Isabela Skrlac followed with a single, and a Waynesburg throwing error on the relay throw into the infield allowed Rodriguez to score and Skrlac to advance all the way to third base, with no outs.
Shelley barely missed a walk-off home run in the following at-bat, with her drive to left caught at the wall. That was plenty deep, though, to allow Skrlac to come home to tie the game at 5-5. After the second out of the inning, senior Lexi Zanic drove one deep to left field that hit the top of the wall and stayed in, Geneva's second near walk-off home run of the frame. Her double put her in scoring position, though, and she was able to walk home when Robbins hit the next pitch over the left field fence to set off a dramatic celebration at home plate with the walk-off home run.
Senior Alena Campbell picked up the win in relief, not allowing an earned run in 1.2 innings of work.
Shelley led the offense with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate, including a double, two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Zanic and Skrlac both added two hits apiece, while Robbins provided the dramatic ending with her first home run of the season.
Game two proved to be a much different affair, with Tvaroch taking the ball in the circle and putting together one the best pitching performances of the season. She dominated from the start, never allowing the Yellow Jackets' talented offense to get going. She struck out two in the first inning, a sign of things to come.
The Golden Tornadoes couldn't do a lot either against Waynesburg starter Emily Pratt. Senior Madison Rapp provided the only offense of the first few innings when her two-out triple brought home senior Mallie Ruscitti, who was pinch running after junior Faith Bonar walked with one out.
That was the only run through the first five innings, but Geneva was able to find some success in the bottom of the sixth against the Waynesburg bullpen, scoring twice with two outs to add some insurance runs. Bonar brought home Zanic with an RBI-single, and junior Aliya Ottaviani followed with a single to drive in Robbins.
That was more than enough offense for Tvaroch, who sailed through the remainder of the game, eventually retiring 11 of the final 12 batters she faced. She earned her sixth victory of the season by allowing just four hits and one walk, while striking out eight, in the complete game shutout.
Bonar and Rapp each posted two hits and an RBI to the attack.
Geneva will take its six-game winning streak to Hiram on Thursday for a doubleheader with the Terriers, the first time the Golden Tornadoes have faced Hiram as a conference opponent. First pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m.
