Softball Extends Winning Streak to Eight Games with Sweep at W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Geneva College softball team extended its winning streak to eight games with a dominating sweep at W&J on Wednesday, defeating the Presidents 9-0 in five innings in game one and then following that victory up with a 7-2 win in game two.  The Golden Tornadoes are now 19-5 overall, 8-2 in Presidents' Athletic Conference play.

In game one of the day, Geneva got on the board in the top of the first when senior Justine Robbins' two-out double brought home senior Lexi Zanic.

Senior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle, and she was in command from the opening pitch.  After a two-out hit in the bottom of the first, Rapp retired the next 12 Presidents she faced, while the offense blew the game open in the top of the third, scoring six times, all with two outs.

Sophomores Stacey Rodriguez and Isabela Skrlac opened the frame with back-to-back singles, and after the next two batters were retired, the next five Golden Tornadoes reached base.  Zanic's double scored both Rodriguez and Skrlac, and after Robbins and junior Faith Bonar walked to load the bases, junior Aliya Ottaviani cleared the bases with a triple.  Senior Madison Rapp followed with an RBI-single to bring home Ottaviani to finish the scoring in the inning.

Geneva added two more runs in the top of the fifth courtesy an RBI-single from senior Jorja Koerner and an RBI-groundout from Skrlac, and Rapp finished the game off with a scoreless bottom of the inning to invoke the mercy rule.

Rapp gave up just two hits in her five-inning complete-game shutout, not walking anyone while striking out four to earn her seventh win of the season.

Zanic led the offense, reaching base all three times while going 2-for-2 with a double, a hit-by-pitch, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Ottaviani drove in three and scored twice, while eight of the nine starters had at least one hit.

Senior Sophia Tvaroch got the start in the second game, and she was equally as impressive in the circle.  The offense gave her an early run when Zanic homered in the top of the first.

Geneva opened up a big lead with four more runs in the top of the fourth, with all four runs scoring after there were two outs.  Madison Rapp had an RBI-single, Rodriguez drove in two more with a single, and sophomore Katelynn Knepper brought home the final run of the inning with a single.

The Golden Tornadoes added singles runs in the next two innings courtesy RBI-singles from juniors Kyra Wilcox and Callie Mangan.

Geneva's bullpen finished up the final two innings of the game, allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh for the only runs of the day for W&J.

Tvaroch earned her seventh win of the season with five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits while striking out four.

Junior Molly Shelley posted two hits in game two, adding a run and two stolen bases.  Rapp scored twice, while Rodriguez drove in two in another balanced offensive attack that saw eight different Golden Tornadoes contribute at least one hit.

Geneva will return to action this Saturday when the women host Allegheny at 1:00 p.m. for another doubleheader.
