BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – After suffering a heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Allegheny in game one of softball's doubleheader with Allegheny on Saturday afternoon at home, which broke Geneva's eight-game winning streak, the women rebounded in game two for a 5-2 victory over the Gators to split their doubleheader. Geneva is now 20-6 overall, 9-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
Senior McKenzie Rapp got the start in the circle in game one, and she was perfect through six full innings. Geneva gave her two early runs of support in the bottom of the first when senior Justine Robbins brought home both junior Kyra Wilcox and senior Lexi Zanic with a double, giving the Golden Tornadoes a quick 2-0 advantage.
Rapp induced lots of soft contact through the first six innings, without a single Gator reaching base. The Golden Tornadoes had multiple golden opportunities to extend their lead but left several runners on base, which eventually came back to haunt them in the seventh.
The top of the seventh started ominously when an error on an Allegheny pop-up allowed the Gators to break the perfect game. The next batter singled to break up the no-hitter, but Rapp recovered to retire the next two batters to near the complete-game shutout. Unfortunately, Allegheny followed with a single and a double to plate three runners, with all three runs unearned, and Geneva couldn't answer in the bottom of the frame in falling 3-2.
Rapp took the hard-luck loss after carrying a perfect game into the seventh. Robbins and Wilcox both posted two hits to lead the offense.
Geneva rebounded in game two, though, behind the effort of senior starter Sophia Tvaroch. She gave up just one hit through the first four innings, and the Golden Tornadoes gave her some run support in the third and fourth innings.
Wilcox came up with the key hit in the third inning, singling with two outs to bring home sophomore Stacey Rodriguez and junior Molly Shelley.
Geneva added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to open up a 5-0 lead, with all the runs scoring again with two outs. Rodriguez doubled home senior Madison Rapp and junior Aliya Ottaviani, and junior Malerie Branson followed with an RBI-single to score Rodriguez.
Tvaroch ran into some control problems in the of the fifth, loading the bases with one out on a single and two walks. Senior Jorja Koerner relieved Tvaroch, though, and limited the damage to just one run.
Allegheny added a second run in the top of the sixth, but McKenzie Rapp relieved Koerner to start the seventh and pitched a perfect seventh to close out the victory, 5-2, and earn the save, her 16th career save, which set a new school record.
Tvaroch earned her eighth win of the season, pitching 4.1 innings while giving up just two hits, striking out three. The run in the fifth was the first earned run she has allowed in 23 innings.
Rodriguez had the big game offensively in game two, going 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs. Robbins also had two hits, while Wilcox drove in two runners.
Geneva is scheduled to finish its suspended doubleheader against Hiram on Tuesday at home, starting at 4:00 p.m. The two teams will pick up where they left off, tied 4-4 in the fourth inning when rain caused the suspension.
