Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Men’s Volleyball Falls at First Place Saint Vincent

LATROBE, Pa. – The Geneva College men's volleyball team lost at first place Saint Vincent on Wednesday night, falling in straight sets 25-14, 25-20, 25-17.

The Golden Tornadoes could never get much going against a Bearcat squad that came into the night undefeated in Presidents' Athletic Conference play, sitting at 9-0 in the conference.  Saint Vincent jumped out to leads of 4-1 and 9-3 in the first set.  Geneva did pull within 13-10 on a kill from freshman Hunter Mozley, but the Bearcats followed with a 9-2 run before eventually closing out the set, 25-14.

The second set was the most competitive set of the match.  Three early kills from junior Owen Kelley gave the Golden Tornadoes a 4-2 advantage, and the set stayed close until the Bearcats used a run midway through the set.  With the score tied at 12-12, Saint Vincent followed with a 6-1 run to grab the advantage, going on to win 25-20.

The Bearcats jumped out to another early lead in the third set, 4-1.  Geneva closed with one, 5-4, before Saint Vincent scored the next six points to take control of the set.  The Golden Tornadoes pulled within four, 15-11, after two more kills from Kelley and an ace from freshman Joshua Stowe, but the Bearcats pulled away from there to win the set, 25-17.

Kelley led the team with 12 kills on a .370 hitting percentage, along with ten digs, while senior Evan Puhl contributed six kills on a .417 percentage.  Unfortunately, the rest of the attack struggled, with Geneva finishing with just an .050 hitting percentage.  Saint Vincent hit .218 in the match.  Senior Andrew Ubinger finished with 21 assists.

The men will play their final home match of the season on Friday when Geneva hosts Bethany inside Metheny Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.  The Golden Tornadoes will recognize their three seniors, Puhl, Ubinger and Paul O'Donnell, prior to the match.
