Women’s Volleyball Stumbles on the Road at Grove City

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva women's volleyball team traveled north to Grove City College on Wednesday evening, falling to the Wolverines in three sets (20-25, 17-25, 15-25). It was a tough evening for the Golden Tornadoes, who never quite rediscovered their stride after starting the match well. With the loss, they drop to 7-8 overall, 0-2 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City continues to roll at 14-3, 2-0 in PAC play.

A well-balanced Geneva attack gave Geneva a brief lead at the beginning of the first set, with a kill by senior Daphne Alexander putting the women ahead 7-3. The hosts went on a 5-1 run to tie things up, but the GTs responded well, using some strong serving by freshman Kyla Kephart and a couple of good kills from freshman Sarah Elkins to go in front 17-11. A 14-3 Grove City run completely killed any Geneva momentum, however, the Wolverines took set one 25-20.

Senior Gracyn Lee got two kills right off the bat in set two to spur Geneva to a 3-0 edge, but Grove City absorbed the early deficit and used a 7-1 run later in the frame to gain a 13-8 lead. The GTs pulled within one point, 15-14, on a solo block from Lee, but the Wolverines saw out the rest of the set to win it 25-17.

Grove City jumped in front 9-2 to start set three, and Geneva never pulled closer than four points the rest of way, eventually losing the set 25-15.

Sophomore Kendall Anderson was the top kill-getter for the Golden Tornadoes, registering six kills in the loss. Kephart dished out 10 assists, and freshman Vanessa Crider recorded a team-high 15 digs. Lee was a bright spot for Geneva, notching five kills on just eight swings to go with a couple of blocks.

Geneva hosts a tri-match this weekend, with Saint Francis University and the College of Wooster coming to Beaver Falls on Friday, October 2. The women will play the Red Wolves in the opening match at 3:30 p.m. and then the Fighting Scots in the final contest after the other two schools play the middle match.
