BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – It was a quick turnaround for the Geneva men's soccer team on Saturday evening as they had just about 24 hours to rest up from their upset victory over Calvin on the opening day of the Nate Ferraco Classic the day before. The Golden Tornadoes' second match of the Classic was against Baldwin Wallace University, and head coach
Gary Dunda's squad battled to a 0-0 draw against a Yellow Jackets team that has historically played Geneva pretty tough. The draw puts the GTs' record at 1-1-1 after the opening week of play.
The first half did not provide many fireworks for either side, with the two teams taking just three shots between them through the first 35 minutes. The men had a brief scare early on when a Yellow Jacket cross from the right side was nearly bicycled in from the penalty spot, but freshman goalkeeper
Eli Stasiowski made a quick save to keep things tied up. Baldwin Wallace attempted three shots in the final ten minutes of the half, including one that hit off the crossbar, but the score remained 0-0 as the halftime whistle sounded.
Things began to get chippy early on in the second half, as Baldwin Wallace began to test the referee. Four different Yellow Jackets were shown yellow cards in a span of eight minutes as the visitors made several ill-advised tackles to start the frame. Three more yellows were shown to BWU before the match ended, as well as one to Geneva, but no players received more than one and were able to stay on the pitch.
Geneva's best chance of the evening came in the 87
th minute, as sophomore
Travis Miller unleashed a shot toward the bottom right corner of the net, beating the keeper. Unfortunately for the men, a Yellow Jacket defender was well-positioned and was able to clear the ball off the line before it crossed into the goal. That was the last major chance for either side in the 0-0 draw.
Stasiowski made three saves for the GTs to earn the first shutout of his collegiate career. Miller and fellow sophomore
Logan Pappert registered Geneva's shots on goal.
The men will have a few days rest before hosting Capital University on Wednesday, September 9. That match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
