HOUGHTON, N.Y. – After opening the season with two victories, the Geneva College women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the year on Saturday afternoon, losing 2-0 at Houghton a day after a 2-1 victory at Elmira. The Golden Tornadoes had the disadvantage of playing for the second time in two days while spending several hours on the bus over that timeframe. The women are now 2-1 on the season.
Houghton got on the board early on Saturday, scoring in the 11th minute to force Geneva to play from behind. The women managed to overcome a 1-0 halftime deficit 24 hours earlier at Elmira, but they couldn't duplicate that comeback on Saturday.
Just four minutes into the second half, the Highlanders doubled their lead with another goal. The deficit proved too much to overcome and the Golden Tornadoes, after scoring five times over their first two games, failed to find the back of the net before falling 2-0.
Houghton finished the match with a 12-7 advantage in shots, 9-2 in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Foster finished with seven saves to prevent more damage.
The women will wrap up this three-game road trip on Tuesday with a challenging match at Wooster before returning home to face a talented Kenyon squad on Friday.
