WAYNESBURG, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team suffered a damaging loss to its Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoff hopes on Tuesday night at Waynesburg, dropping a tight 1-0 decision. Waynesburg improved to 5-10-2 overall, 3-3-2 in the PAC, while Geneva fell to 8-8, 3-4 in the PAC.
The Golden Tornadoes came into tonight's match with almost no margin for error if they wanted to advance into the postseason. Geneva had two matches remaining in the regular season, and it really needed to win them both against Waynesburg and Westminster.
Waynesburg had the better of the play in the first half, holding most of the possession while having more offensive chances. Despite that edge, Geneva was able to keep the Yellow Jackets off the board, helped by four saves by senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area). Neither team found a goal as the game went to halftime scoreless. Waynesburg outshot Geneva 11-4 in the half.
The second half flipped a bit, as Geneva began to gain the better of the play. In fact, after being called on to make four saves in the first half, Lincoln had a quieter half as Waynesburg wasn't able to get a shot on goal for most of the half. Unfortunately, Geneva couldn't convert any of its chances, and that came back to haunt the Golden Tornadoes when in the 83rd minute, Waynesburg earned a penalty kick. The Yellow Jackets' Teagan Jenner stepped up and converted the chance, and that proved to be the game-winner in the 1-0 victory.
"That was a very frustrating loss," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "We didn't play particularly well in the first half, but our defense was good enough to keep the game scoreless. We controlled more of the game in the second half, but ultimately you have to convert your chances, and we couldn't do that tonight, and it cost us."
The final stats showed a very even match. Waynesburg held slight edges in shots, 15-14, and shots on goal, 5-4. Senior
Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Country Christian) led the offense with five shots.
With the loss, Geneva's playoff chances are on life-support. The Golden Tornadoes will need to win at Westminster on Saturday, who is currently sitting in first place in the conference. Geneva will also need Chatham to lose at home to last-place Bethany on Saturday. The Golden Tornadoes' match against the Titans will start at 4:30 p.m.
