BRADFORD, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team picked up its first road victory of the season on Saturday afternoon after senior
Erica Sumner (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver County Christian) scored late to send Geneva to a 1-0 win over Pitt-Bradford. Geneva improved its record to 3-2, while Pitt-Bradford fell to 1-6.
Neither team could find the net in the first half, though Geneva had a few chances that it failed to convert. The Golden Tornadoes finally broke through in the 83
rd minute when Sumner stole a Pitt-Bradford pass, dribbled around a defender, and scored past the keeper. Geneva held on from there to pick up the win.
"It's always difficult to win on the road, and today was no different," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "I felt like we had the better of the play for most of the match, but we certainly didn't play our best. We failed to capitalize on a number of chances, but ultimately Erica came up with a big goal late to help us pick up the victory."
The final stat sheet shows Geneva outshot Pitt-Bradford 23-13, including an 11-5 advantage in shots on goal. Sumner led the offense with eight shots, while junior
Erin Houser (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) added five shots. Geneva was glad to have senior
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) back in goal after a one-game absence, and she made five saves to pick up her second shutout of the season.
Geneva will be on the road again for its next match when it travels to Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. start.
