BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College women's soccer team allowed an early goal against visiting Marietta College on Saturday afternoon, and it proved to be the only goal of the match as the Pioneers picked up the victory, 1-0. Marietta improved to 4-2-1, while Geneva fell to 3-4.
Both teams had opportunities early in the match, and it was Marietta who took advantage just over two minutes into the game. The Pioneers sent a long ball over the top that Marietta's Kayla Tomlin ran onto, cut back across a defender, and the scored from about 10 yards out. Geneva's senior goalkeeper
Danielle Lincoln (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) came up with two big saves over the next ten minutes, one a leaping save that she pushed onto the bar with her finger tips, to keep the deficit at one. However, Geneva couldn't find a way to penetrate the Marietta defense, settling for long shots from outside the box, and the score stayed the same heading into halftime.
The game settled down in the second half, as the warm and humid afternoon took its toll on both teams. Neither team could find another goal. Lincoln was called into action a couple more times to keep Geneva within striking distance, but the Golden Tornadoes could never find the equalizer, eventually falling 1-0.
"It's tough when you fall behind right off the bat," said Head Coach
Linda Sumner. "You're forced to chase the game a little bit at that point, and a hot day, that took its toll. We settled down after that early score, and Dani was her steady presence as always in goal, but we just couldn't find a way to break down the defense and find a goal."
Marietta outshot Geneva 18-11 on the afternoon, including an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman
Katherine Estep (Dublin, Pa./Pennridge) had a team-high three shots. Lincoln made seven saves in the match.
Geneva continues its four-game homestand with a match against Hilbert on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
