GREENVILLE, Pa. – For the second time in three weeks, Geneva College men's basketball junior Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The award is not a surprise after Tipton had another huge week in leading Geneva to two victories to open conference play.
Tipton opened the week with a 35-point effort at Thiel in the PAC opener on Wednesday, shooting 13-of-17 from the floor, 2-of-3 from three-point range, and 7-of-9 from the free throw line. He added nine rebounds, five assists, five blocks and two steals.
On Saturday, with Geneva hosting previously undefeated Chatham, Tipton finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. He hit what proved to be the game-winning shot with 18 seconds remaining when, with Geneva trailing by one, he stole the ball and scored in the 81-79 victory over the Cougars. He also added three assists, two steals and two blocks.
For the season, Tipton is averaging 27.5 points per game, sixth in NCAA Division III and tops in the PAC. He is also averaging 9.2 rebounds per game, fifth in the PAC. He is also fifth in the PAC in field goal percentage (56.5%), ninth in free throw percentage (71.7%), eighth in steals per game (2.0) and third in blocked shots per game (2.2).
The men's team has a few days off this week before heading to Westminster on Saturday for a big early-season matchup with the PAC preseason favorite Titans. That game is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
