BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The awards keep rolling in for Geneva College men's basketball forward Lyle Tipton (Glenside, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian), and on Tuesday the junior received two national awards. Early in the day Tipton was named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week, which recognizes the top five players from the past week in Division III, and later in the day he was named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Division III National Player of the Week.
Tipton is putting together one of the best seasons in the 130-year storied history of Geneva College basketball. Last week he led Geneva to two victories to open conference play, totaling a stat line in a victory at Thiel on Wednesday that included 35 points, nine rebounds, five assists, five blocks and two steals. He then followed that up on Saturday with 22 points and 10 rebounds, including the game-winning steal and layup with 18 seconds remaining, to help Geneva defeat previously undefeated Chatham, 81-79. He did all this while shooting 65% from the floor during the week.
Tipton has put up almost video game like numbers so far this season, averaging 27.5 points, on 57% shooting from the floor, while adding 9.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.1 blocks and 2.0 steals. His 27.5 points per game are sixth in NCAA Division III.
Tipton is the only Geneva player to ever be named to the D3Hoops.com Team of the Week, and this is his second time receiving the honor after being recognized once last season. He is also the first Golden Tornado to ever be recognized by the USBWA as its National Player of the Week.
