MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- A few members of the Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams traveled to West Virginia University on Saturday to participate in the WVU Last Chance meet, and senior Jack Garvin, who skipped Geneva's graduation ceremony to participate at the meet, made it worthwhile as he set a personal best in the high jump and put himself on the border of qualifying for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet.
Garvin cleared 2.01 meters (6'7") in his final attempt at the height, surpassing his personal best during the outdoor season of 1.95 meters. That jump puts him into a tie for 22nd in NCAA Division III, which is currently the cutoff to qualify for the Division III Championships, though he'll have to wait for the final two weeks to complete to see if his jump holds. That height is also just two inches off the school record.  Garvin also set a personal best in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.29 seconds, while throwing 41.51 meters in the javelin.
Senior Giovanni Segura also competed for the men in the throws, tossing 34.75 meters in the discus, 31.24 meters in the hammer throw, and 12.95 meters in the shot put. Junior Jackson Thomas also competed in the throws, finishing with a personal best distance of 44.71 meters meters in the javelin, while also throwing 30.11 meters in the hammer throw and 11.67 meters in the shot put.
Freshman Allison Standish highlighted the day on the women's side. She threw a distance of 38.68 meters in the hammer throw and 10.60 meters in the shot put. Junior Emma Jackson finished with a toss of 9.91 meters in the shot put.
A handful of Golden Tornadoes have qualified for the NCCAA National Championships, which will take place this week at Columbia International in South Carolina. The three-day meet starts on Wednesday.
