WASHINGTON, Pa. – After earning the No. 5 seed in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) playoff tournament, the Geneva women's tennis team drove down to Washington & Jefferson College for a PAC quarterfinal match against the No. 4 seed Presidents on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, W&J got the better of the women, defeating them 4-2. Despite the loss, the season can be considered a success under new head coach
Nate Heidengren, who in his first season at the helm guided the GTs to their first playoff berth in over four years.
The Golden Tornadoes standout No. 1 doubles team, senior
Lauren Estes and sophomore
Chloe DeSanzo, got things started off on the right foot for Geneva with a victory in the top doubles flight. However, the women lost the next two doubles matches, dropping the doubles point to W&J.
DeSanzo and Estes continued to play well as the match transitioned to singles play, getting wins in both of the top singles flights. DeSanzo took her match in the No. 1 spot, 6-3, 6-2, while Estes defeated W&J's No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Those were the only two points Geneva would earn, however, and the Presidents won the next three matches to complete the victory.
The contest was the last for the Golden Tornadoes this semester, although the women will play a few matches in their spring season. W&J moves on to the semifinal round of the PAC tournament where they will face off against top-seeded Allegheny College.
