MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Allison Standish broke her own school record in the hammer throw at the West Virginia Marty Pushkin Invitational this weekend, highlighting the performances for the Golden Tornadoes in very challenging weather conditions on Saturday.
The meet actually began on Friday with a few throwing events, and Standish broke her record on the initial day when she threw 43.43 meters, which placed her fourth behind three Division I throwers. She also threw on Saturday in the shot put and discus. She placed ninth in the shot put with a throw of 10.92 meters, while she finished 17th in the discus with an effort of 29.25 meters.
Also on Friday, senior Timothy Ehko had a personal best throw in the javelin, finishing fourth overall with a toss of 49.12 meters, while senior Jackson Thomas finished eighth with a personal best throw of 46.87 meters. In addition, junior Emily Garvin threw 34.11 meters in the javelin to finish sixth overall on the women's side.
Saturday proved to be a challenging day to compete. Temperatures were in the 40s, along with strong winds, with periodic rain and even a short instance of hail. Several competitors scratched in their events to avoid injury.
For those that did compete on Saturday, freshman Abraham Konneh ran the 200-meters in 23.43 seconds, while finishing the 100-meters in 11.61 seconds.
Freshman Trevor Nasso finished sixth in the 1500-meter steeplechase with a time of 4:47.93. Freshman Nathaniel Smith finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.48.
On the women's side, sophomores Daphne Alexander and Katelyn Mathews, along with freshman Olivia Seetoo, all cleared 1.40 meters in the high jump. Mathews and Seetoo tied for fifth, while Alexander placed eighth.
The Golden Tornadoes will hope for better conditions next Saturday when they travel to West Liberty for a meet.
