Carroll and Standish Break Records to Highlight Day One at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Seniors Hailey Carroll and Allison Standish had impressive performances on the Friday on the first day of the Carnegie Mellon Invitational, breaking school records with nationally strong marks.  Their performances highlighted the results for the Golden Tornadoes on the initial day of the meet.

Hammer throw was the first event of the day at the meet, and Standish wasted no time in breaking the school record, which she held coming into the day at 43.57 meters.  Her first throw of the day hit 45.08 meters, but she wasn't done yet.  Her fifth throw increased the school record to 45.85, and then on her final throw she hit 48.15 meters, which is currently the 14th best mark so far in Division III.  The performance put her third overall at the meet, behind the University of Pittsburgh's top two throwers.  Standish also added a seventh-place finish in the shot put, throwing 11.98 meters.

Carroll continued her standout season with another school record effort, this time in the 1500-meter race.  She broke the school record, which was set 15 years ago, by seven seconds when she crossed the line in 4:38.55, just a half second behind a runner from Pitt.  In fact, she finished ahead of two other runners from Pitt in her impressive run.  That time is currently sixth overall in Division III.  Senior Carmen Medvit also ran a standout time, finishing eighth with a time of 4:48.54, which wasn't far off from also breaking the prior school record.  That time is currently 33rd in Division III.

Junior Isaac Nirella nearly missed out on the school record in pole vault, winning the event by clearing 4.54 meters, just .03 meters off the program mark.

The bulk of the events will occur tomorrow, with the first throwing event scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m., with running events set to start at 12:00 p.m.
