History Accomplished: Women Win Outdoor PAC Championship

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The Geneva College women's track and field team won the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Outdoor Championships on Friday, pulling away from rival Grove City at the end of the meet to win by 17 points, finishing with 140.5 points.  In doing so, Geneva became the first school in conference history to win both the men's and women's cross country championships, the men's and women's indoor track and field championships, and the men's and women's outdoor championships in the same season.

The squad came into the meet with the narrowest of predicted margins.  According to the seed times entering the meet, Geneva held a one point lead over Grove City and a two point lead over Westminster in trying to capture the women's third championship this school year.

The meet started on Thursday, and senior Allison Standish's title in the hammer throw, senior Carmen Medvit's school record in the 10000m and junior Kaelyn Hartman's personal best jump in the triple jump highlighted the day, but the women still trailed going into the final day of the meet on Friday when most of the events occurred.

The women slowly started to build a lead throughout the day, though, and the title was clinched in the second-to-last event, the 5000m race, when Medvit placed second with a time of 17:26.65, senior Hailey Carroll placed third with a time of 17:46.26, and sophomore Audrey McAlister finished seventh with a time of 18:51.39.

Carroll, who was named the Women's Track Most Valuable Performer at the conclusion of the meet by securing the most points of any women's runner at the championship, also won the 1500m race with a time of 4:37.14 while adding a second-place finish in the 800m race with a time of 2:17.81, completing an extremely taxing day for the standout runner.

The women started the day well in the high jump.  Junior Daphne Alexander added to her indoor title win in the high jump with a win in the outdoor meet, clearing 1.60 meters.  Sophomore Olivia Seetoo set a personal best by clearing 1.57 meters to capture second place, while junior Katelyn Mathews finished in a tie for eighth with a jump clearing 1.41 meters.

Geneva's sprinters had a strong day as well, with sophomore Arionna White setting personal bests in both the 100m (12.63 seconds) and 200m (26.08 seconds) races, placing second in both events.  Sophomore Sara Vos also ran well, finishing fourth in the 100m (12.67 second) and fifth in the 200m (26.65 seconds) races.  The pair was also critical in the relays.  Vos, White, Alexander and senior Rowan Dennis placed second in the 4x100m relay with a time of 49.38 seconds, while Vos, White, Dennis and junior Brooklen Helton finished third in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:11.66.  Both results were significantly better than their expected seed times.

The women got contributions up and down their roster.  Senior Emily Garvin placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 36.14 meters.  Freshman Grace Hersch finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a personal best time of 1:08.41, sophomore Sienna Jackson placed sixth in the 10000 meters with a personal best time of 40:50.39, and sophomore Emma Thellman finished sixth in the pole vault, clearing 2.80 meters.

Additionally, Alexander, who had a very busy day, added a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.04 seconds, while freshman Rachel Baird also scored in the event, finishing eighth with a time of 16.74 seconds, despite clipping a hurdle that prevented her from a higher finish.  Freshman Nicole Ochs added an eighth-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a personal best time of 12:39.89.

Head Coach Phil Thompson was named the Women's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year for the squad he put together.

Friday's PAC Championship brings an end to most of the Golden Tornadoes' standout season, but Alexander in the high jump and Carroll in the 1500m have a decent chance to qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championship meet towards the end of May.  The women have a tremendous senior class that went out in style by achieving a feat that no Geneva program, or PAC school, has ever accomplished.
