PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- First-year women's tennis Head Coach Nate Heidengren earned his first career victory as head coach on Friday night when the women's tennis team opened the year with a sweep of Carlow 7-0 at Highland Park Tennis Club. Heidengren won many matches as a player for Geneva during his standout career, but this was his first as a coach.
The women got off to a great start in doubles. Senior Lauren Estes and sophomore Chloe DeSanzo won their match in No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Senior CeJaelyn Perednia and junior Rachel Hodsden swept their opponents in No. 2 doubles, 6-0, and senior Jenna Allison and freshman Paige Phillips won in No. 3 doubles, 6-1. That earned Geneva the doubles point.
In singles play, DeSanzo won 6-1, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Estes almost swept her opponent in No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-1. Hodsden took No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-3, while Perednia won No. 4 singles by the same score. Freshman Abigail Anderson won her first collegiate match in No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-2, while junior Caroline Reed finished off the sweep in No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-0.
The women will have a week off before returning to action next Saturday with a 12:00 p.m. home match against Baldwin Wallace.
