GREENWOOD, Ind. – Five Geneva College football players were named to the Academic All-District Team by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) on Tuesday. Seniors Ryan Reitler, Brady Russo and Seth Tyson, along with juniors Roman Costanza and Caleb Romano, were all honored by the CSC for their excellence both on the field and in the classroom. In addition, Romano was named a finalist for CSC Academic All-American honors, with the winners being announced in a few weeks.
To be eligible for the academic all-district award, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically and hold a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.50. Student-athletes must also have played in at least 90 percent of their team's games or been a starter in at least 66 percent of their contests.
Romano, a sports management and business major, is the first Golden Tornado to be named a finalist for the Academic All-American honors in several years. He completed the most prolific passing season in school history, earning All-PAC honors while breaking multiple single-season and single-game records in leading Geneva to its first postseason appearance since 2009. The All-American awards will be announced on January 27. This is the second straight year he has been named an Academic All-District selection.
Costanza, an engineering major, has started all 21 games at offensive guard since transferring to Geneva prior to his sophomore season. He earned All-PAC honors for his play this past season, and this is also the second straight season he has been honored as an Academic All-District selection.
Reitler, a biology major, was a strong asset for the Golden Tornadoes in the kicking game this year. He converted three field goals of over 40 yards, including a 46-yarder, while posting seven touchbacks on kickoffs, earning All-PAC honors. This is also his second straight year earning Academic All-District honors.
Russo, a social studies education major, contributed along both the offensive and defensive lines at times this year. He spent the majority of his time as a starter at one of Geneva's offensive tackle positions, but he also helped out occasionally along the defensive line when needed. This is Russo's third straight season earning Academic All-District honors.
Tyson, an Applied Mathematics major, was a key part of Geneva's prolific passing attack, earning All-PAC honors after finishing second in school history for a single season with 73 catches, which was also the second most in the PAC. This is his second straight season earning Academic All-District honors.
