Tennis Sweeps Mount Aloysius

Box Score BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — The weekend didn't get off to a good start for Head Coach Mandee Craft when she learned that multiple players on the Geneva men's tennis team had come down with the flu.  However, Craft was able to pull from the improved depth on the roster this season and assemble a lineup that swept Mount Aloysius College on Friday evening, 9-0, at Brady's Run Courts.

This was Geneva's first match of the spring season after winning all five matches in the fall, and the Golden Tornadoes faced a Mount Aloysius squad that had defeated them the last two years.  Despite the previous history and the fact Geneva was down multiple players, Geneva managed to win all nine matches.

In #1 singles, freshman Alex Beck won his match 6-2, 6-4.  In #2 singles, freshman Nate Heidengren won his match 6-4, 6-4.  In #3 singles, senior Jesse Hooke defeated his opponent in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 10-6.  In #4 singles, senior Ethan Stahl easily won his match 6-0, 6-0.  In #5 singles, sophomore Alex Greissinger pulled his match out in three sets 7-6, 1-6, 10-7.  And in #6 singles, junior Caleb Hoal dominated his opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles went just as well for the Golden Tornadoes, as Beck and Heidengren won 8-4, Hooke and Stahl won 8-3, and Greissinger and junior Adam Borst teamed up for an 8-1 win.

"This was a great win," Craft said afterwards.  "Despite some last minute lineup changes this week, our guys really stepped up.  We had lost to Mount Aloysius the past two years, so it's nice to reverse that trend.  And it was great to see Jesse and Alex both pull out third set tiebreakers."

Geneva goes on the road next Saturday, February 24, for its only doubleheader of the spring season.  The Golden Tornadoes play at Penn State Altoona at 10:30 a.m., and then they travel to take on Pitt-Greensburg at 5:30 p.m.
