Tennis Wins Pair of Road Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GREENSBURG, Pa. — The Geneva College men's tennis team swept a pair of road matches on Saturday, beating Penn State Altoona in the morning, 7-2, and then sweeping Pitt-Greensburg in the evening, 9-0.  Geneva's record improved to 8-0.

In the first match, Geneva won five of the six singles matches after the Golden Tornadoes made the early morning trip out to Penn State Altoona.  Freshman Alex Beck won in first singles, 8-2.  Senior Ethan Stahl won in third singles, 8-3.  Freshman Drake Greenstein won in fourth singles, 8-5.  Senior Jesse Hooke won in fifth singles, 8-6.  And sophomore Alex Greissinger won in sixth singles, 8-4.

In doubles, junior Eric Abbott teamed with Stahl in second doubles to win 8-6, and junior Caleb Hoal and senior David Streit won in third doubles, 8-3.

"This is just the kind of non-conference match you want," Head Coach Mandee Craft said after the morning match.  "There were lots of close battles.  It got a little bit tight close to the end, but Jesse clinched it for us and then we rolled from there."

The team then made the ninety minute drive to Pitt-Greensburg for an evening match, and the Golden Tornadoes dominated throughout each flight.  In first singles, freshman Nate Heidengren won 6-2, 6-0.  In second singles, Stahl won 6-0, 6-0.  In third singles, Greenstein won 6-1, 6-1.  In fourth singles, Hooke won 6-1, 6-2.  In fifth singles, Greissinger won 6-3, 6-1.  And in sixth singles, Streit won 6-1, 6-3.

In doubles action, Abbott teamed with Heidengren to win 8-1 in first doubles.  Stahl and Greenstein teamed up in second doubles to win 8-1.  And in third doubles, Hoal and Greissinger won 8-6.

"This was another strong performance for our guys this evening," Craft said.  "Playing two matches in a day, with travel in between, is a test both mentally and physically, and we definitely passed the test today."

Geneva has a week off for spring break before the Golden Tornadoes return to action for a match on Saturday, March 10, at Frostburg State at 2 p.m.  Following that match, Geneva will begin Presidents' Athletic Conference competition on Monday, March 19, at Saint Vincent.  The Golden Tornadoes next home match is on Thursday, March 22, when they host Westminster.
