Girardi Hired by Kansas City Chiefs

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. — Former Geneva College quarterback David Girardi put together quite a playing career during his four years on College Hill.  Since then Girardi has begun to climb the ladder in the coaching ranks, and last month Girardi was hired as an offensive quality control coach with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Girardi arrived at Geneva in 2007, and by 2008 he had taken over the starting QB position for the Golden Tornadoes.  By the time his senior year ended, Girardi had started 30 games and thrown for 5,997 yards and 37 touchdowns in his career.  He led Geneva to a win over Greenville University in the 2009 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl, and he was named as an NCCAA All-American in both 2009 and 2010.

Girardi began his coaching career as an assistant coach for the Golden Tornadoes before moving on to Northwestern University where he worked for three seasons on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball.  Last year Girardi spent the season as the quarterbacks coach at Lafayette College.

"David was a very special QB when he was here," Head Coach Geno DeMarco said.  "I could see that he was a student of the game, and we spent a lot of time watching practice and game film.  We won the NCCAA National Championship with his leadership.  As a coach, he was tremendous at preparing our quarterbacks, and we were one of the top offenses in the conference during his time on staff.  Having worked with his brother, Dom, and his father, Frank, it was evident that football was, and still is, his passion."

Girardi will have the opportunity to work underneath well-known NFL head coach Andy Reid, as well as with the Chiefs 2017 first round draft pick, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who will be taking over the Kansas City starting position from departed starter, Alex Smith.

The hire is another example of an interesting connection between Geneva College and Kansas and Kansas City sports teams.  In 2002, former Geneva assistant football coach Mark Mangino was hired by the University of Kansas where he eventually led the Jayhawks to an Orange Bowl victory in 2008.  In 2005, the Kansas City Chiefs signed former Geneva football player Kris Griffin as an undrafted free agent, and he quickly developed into a regular contributor to the linebackers group.  Then in 2013, Geneva starting pitcher Mike Jeffreys signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals to play in its minor league farm system.
