ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. – The Geneva College men's golf team hosted Waynesburg University at Connoquenessing County Club on Thursday afternoon for the program's first home match since restarting the program this fall after a forty-year hiatus. The match was played under a match play format, with Geneva winning the overall match 3-2 over Waynesburg.
The fate was sealed when freshman Joshua Hido (Kent, Ohio/Theodore Roosevelt) made a 12-foot downhill putt on hole 17 to win his match 2&1 over Waynesburg's Briston Bennett. The two other Geneva matches that were won were by senior Trent Belleville (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) and sophomore Jacob DeLisio (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton), winning 7&6 and 4&2, respectively.
Despite a good round by freshman Parker Cera (Titusville, Fla./Titusville) with a score of 80, he lost his match 2&1 to Cannon Hay of Waynesburg, who was the overall medalist of the day with a score of 77. Additionally, freshman Michael DeMiere (Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin) lost his match 6&5 to Luke Diel.
"It was a better day on the course for us today," said Head Coach Andrew Fee. "We still did a lot of things that we shouldn't be doing this deep into the season, but it is good to pick up the win at home. This is a match that I hope to build off of as we get closer to the start of our conference tournament in October."
In Geneva's second group, senior Brady Corklin (Titusville, Pa./Titusville) led the way with an 89. Freshman Timothy Ehko (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) shot a 96, while junior Ryan Signorella (Brackenridge, Pa./Highlands) finished with the same score. Freshman Brenden Connolly (Hull, Mass./South Shore Vocational Technical) rounded out the group with a 98.
The men will get an opportunity to play again tomorrow as they head to Kent State Tuscarawas for a four-team tournament.
