YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio --- Carmen Medvit and Allison Standish have set the tone for the 2022-23 season as the Geneva women's indoor track & field team competed at the Youngstown State Icebreaker at the Watson and Tressel Training Site on Friday. The YSU Icebreaker featured over 40 collegiate teams from around the region.
"This was a great first meet for us," said head coach Phil Thompson. "It was great to see Carmen and Allison break school records and I'm excited to see them add to these performances. I'm very pleased with where we are at going into the break. We are heading in the right direction."Â
Medvit set a Geneva record in the 5,000 meter race with a time of 18:31.37, breaking the previous record of 18:41.21 set by Sarah-Noel Meek in the 2013 season. Medvit finished fifth overall in the race.Â
Standish also set a Geneva record on Friday night in the weight throw event. Standish made a toss of 13.58 meters for 17th place, surpassing Anna Ormsby's record of 13.29 meters set in 2020. Standish also finished 14th overall in the shot put with a throw of 10.85 meters.Â
The Golden Tornadoes picked up several other top 20 finishes on the day. Naomi Swartzbaugh placed 10th in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.86 seconds. Liliana Corsello finished 13th overall in the 3,000 meter race with a time of 13:06.48, while Emma Parnell placed 16th overall in the triple jump with a leap of 10.02 meters.Â
Following the finals and holiday breaks, Geneva will return to action on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Muskingum. The Golden Tornadoes will compete two more times in the 2022-23 season – January 21, 2023 and January 27-28, 2023.
