Grove City Takes Final Two Games of Series

BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team dropped the last two games of its series with Grove City on a cold and rainy Friday afternoon by scores of 9-4 and 12-7.  Geneva's record is now 5-12, 1-3 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), while Grove City improved to 12-4, 3-0 in the PAC.

Junior Jarrett Orbin (New Springfield, Ohio/Springfield) got the start in game one, and the Wolverines pushed across a run in the first to take an early lead.

The Geneva offense struggled to get much going against Grove City starter Evan Umland.  The Wolverines added three runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead.  Grove City broke the game open against the Geneva bullpen with two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.

The Golden Tornadoes got on the board in the seventh, scoring four times.  Freshman Zack Sackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) drove in two runs with a single, bring the final score to 9-4.

Grove City finished with just one more hit than Geneva, but the Wolverines did a better job of bunching their hits together.  Senior Dillon Bickerton (Salem, Ohio/Salem) led the offense with three hits, while freshman Cael Brandt (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) added two hits.

Sophomore Jackson Hall (New Brighton, Pa./New Brighton) got the start on the mound in the second game.  Grove City jumped out to a big lead with two runs in the second, three in the third and four runs in the fourth.

Geneva got on the board in the top of the sixth.  Sophomore David Toruno (Menifee, Calif./Paloma Valley) drove in one with a single, and later in the inning Bickerton added a 2-RBI double.

The Golden Tornadoes added two more in the seventh on a 2-RBI single from Toruno, and Bickerton added an RBI-triple in the ninth to wrap up the scoring.

Geneva actually outhit Grove City 14-13 in game two.  Bickerton and Sackett each had three hits, with Bickerton driving in three runs.  Toruno had two hits and four RBIs, while senior Alex Fee (New Castle, Pa./New Castle) added two hits.

Geneva will be back in action on Tuesday when the Golden Tornadoes head to Saint Vincent for a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
