GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Geneva College baseball team fell into a big hole on Thursday afternoon in the series-opener at Thiel, and a despite a late rally, the Golden Tornadoes came up short and lost 11-8. Geneva is now 5-13, 1-4 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference.
The Golden Tornadoes got on the board first in the top of the first when the first three batters singled, with freshman Zack Sackett (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) picking up an RBI. Geneva had a chance for more, but the Golden Tornadoes left two runners on base.
Freshman Jaymes Campbell (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) got the start and breezed through the first two innings, but an error in the third opened the door for the Tomcats to score four times. Thiel added three more in the fourth to break the game open.
Junior Tim Hermansen (Lancaster, Pa./Penn Manor) singled home two runs in the top of the sixth, but Thiel answered with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to take an 11-3 lead.
Geneva rallied in the eighth, as the first five Golden Tornadoes reached base safely, leading to five runs. However, Geneva couldn't complete the comeback and fell 11-8.
Hermansen, junior Gabriel Morales (Homestead, Fla./South Dade) and freshman Connor O'Brien (Swanton, Md./Calvary Christian) each finished with three hits, while Hermansen scored twice and drove in three runs. The Golden Tornadoes actually outhit Thiel 14-9, but the Tomcats did a better job of bunching their hits together, scoring all their runs in three innings, with the other five innings Thiel managing just one hit.
The two teams finish up the series with a doubleheader at Geneva on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
