Track and Field Enjoys Warm Weather at Grove City Mini-Meet

GROVE CITY, Pa. – For the first time this spring, the Geneva College men's and women's track and field teams finally got to enjoy some warmer weather at the Grove City Mini-Meet on Wednesday afternoon, after enduring many days of cold and rain this outdoor season.  The meet had five Presidents' Athletic Conference schools in competition, and several Golden Tornadoes turned in strong performances.

For the women, Geneva brought home two first-place finishes.  Senior Olivia Younger (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.82 seconds, while senior Jessie Taylor (Mohnton, Pa./Governor Mifflin) won the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 11:37.04.

In addition, senior Katryn Gatchell (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) finished second in the 800-meter race with a time of 2:23.63.  Freshman Kendall Shaporka (Grindstone, Pa./Frazier) placed second in the 400-meter race in a time of 1:03.52, while junior Alexis Montgomery (Seneca, Pa./Christian Life Academy) finished second in the javelin with an effort of 30.49 meters.

For the men, senior Dom Data (New Castle, Pa./Shenango) brought home another first-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.65 seconds, narrowly missing out on the school record by .01 seconds.  He also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds.

Senior Josiah Helmer (Hummelstown, Pa./Hummelstown) also brought home a first-place finish, winning the 5000-meter race with a time of 10:18.62.

Other top placers included senior Giovanni Segura (Pittsburgh, Pa./Brentwood), who finished second in the shot put with a toss of 13.39 meters.  Sophomore Noah Foust (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) finished second in the discus with a throw of 43.75 meters, while Foust also finished third in the shot put with a toss of 13.36 meters. 

In addition, freshman Kyle Garman (Hanover, Pa./Hanover) finished second in the high jump with an effort of 1.74 meters, while Geneva's 4x100-meter relay team of Data, junior Josh Blessing (Hershey, Pa./Lower Dauphin), and freshmen Desmond Lewis (Fort Worth, Texas/Saginaw) and Gabe Trexler (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) finished second in a time of 42.84 seconds.

Both teams will be back in action this Saturday at the Thiel Tomcat Invitational.
